Biblical, Dying & Loss

Teach Us To Number Our Days

Lord, you have always

been our safe place.

Before the mountains were born

before you created the world,

from age to age you are God.

Teach us to number our days,

that we may gain a heart of wisdom

With your Word you return people to dust.

For you a thousand years are like a day just gone by,

or like a watch in the night.

Teach us to number our days,

that we may gain a heart of wisdom

You sweep people away in the sleep of death.

We are like the new grass of the morning –

we grow so quickly and fade even faster.

Teach us to number our days,

that we may gain a heart of wisdom

Being mortal is hard.

All we do, and all our sins you see,

all our days are lived under the curse of death, we come to an end with a moan.

We last seventy years, or eighty, if we are strong

yet all our days bring trouble and sorrow,

our life quickly passes and we fly away.

Teach us to number our days,

that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Lord, let your power shine clearly for all to see.

May the beauty of God rest on us;

May what we do be truly lasting.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and will be forever.

   Amen.

– Psalm 90 (refrain added throughout).
